📄 Post 11: Group reflection and references

Group reflection Working on this project helped us understand how deeply social media affects young people’s lives. We learned that while platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X can inspire creativity, connection, and learning, they can also lead to stress and unhealthy comparison if not used wisely. As a group, we enjoyed creating posts, podcasts, and videos that encouraged balance and positive online behavior. This project taught us teamwork, digital skills, and the importance of using technology responsibly to make a positive difference. References  American Psychological Association (APA). (2022). 📄 Post 10: Conclusion

Social media has completely transformed the lives of young people across the world. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter) have become powerful tools for communication, learning, and self-expression. They allow youth to share ideas, explore opportunities, and connect with others globally, breaking down barriers of distance and culture. Many young people today use social media to express creativity, promote businesses, and advocate for important causes like mental health awareness, gender equality, and climate action. However, this digital revolution also brings challenges that cannot be ignored. Excessive use of social media often leads to addiction, distraction, and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The constant need for approval through likes and comments can make young people depend on online validation instead of developing confidence from within. Furthermore, face-to-face communication is slowly weakenin...

Post 9: Balancing Real Life and Online Life

Image
Maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline life is essential in today’s digital society. Too much social media use can cause stress, but responsible use can improve productivity and relationships (Boyd, 2021). Time Management and Self-Control Setting screen time limits and scheduling offline activities help prevent addiction. Many students now use “digital detox” periods to focus on studies and mental health (APA, 2022). Positive Online Habits Following educational and motivational pages can make social media a tool for growth rather than distraction. Youths are encouraged to engage with uplifting content and avoid toxic comparisons (UNICEF, 2021). Post 8: Social media and mental health

Image
Mental health is one of the most discussed topics in the digital age. Social media can both support and harm young people’s psychological well-being, depending on how it is used (APA, 2022). Online Support and Awareness Many youths use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to discuss mental health openly. Influencers and therapists share coping strategies, while awareness campaigns reduce stigma about depression and anxiety (UNICEF, 2021). Comparison and Self-Esteem Issues On the other hand, constant exposure to idealized lives leads to negative self-comparison. Research shows that social media use is linked to low self-esteem, loneliness, and anxiety among frequent users (Twenge, 2023). Sleep and Attention Problems Excessive scrolling and nighttime phone use affect concentration and sleep patterns. Many youths admit to checking notifications during study hours or before bed, which impacts academic performance (Anderson & Jiang, 2018). Social media can be a source of comfort or...

Post 7: Social media lifestyle and fashion influence

Image
Social media has become a global fashion runway where trends are born, shared, and followed. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest play a powerful role in influencing how young people dress, style themselves, and express their identities. For many youths, social media is not just entertainment but it is a major source of lifestyle inspiration (Common Sense Media, 2022). Trend Creation and Influence Influencers and celebrities set global fashion trends through their daily posts. Young users imitate their favorite creators’ outfits, hairstyles, and accessories. TikTok challenges and Instagram reels often make certain brands or aesthetics go viral overnight (Statista, 2023). Consumerism and Brand Promotion Social media has turned fashion into digital marketing. Brands collaborate with influencers to promote products directly to young audiences. This has created opportunities for youth entrepreneurship, but also encourages excessive consumerism and comparison (World Economic...

Post 6: Social media and behavior

Image
In recent years, social media has become a powerful force influencing human behavior, relationships, and communication patterns. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) have changed how people interact and express themselves. While these platforms provide opportunities for connection and self-expression, they also contribute to behavioral changes that affect mental health, identity, and social interactions (Kuss & Griffiths, 2017). 1. Influence on Communication and Social Interaction Social media has revolutionized communication by making interaction faster and more accessible. It allows people to stay in touch regardless of geographical distance and promotes cross-cultural exchange (Kemp, 2024). However, this virtual connection sometimes weakens real-life relationships. Many individuals spend more time online than engaging in face-to-face conversations, leading to reduced empathy and social skills (Turkle, 2015). As a result, social media has made c...
